Hi! I’m Guiselle,

I was born and raised in beautiful Costa Rica and grew up surrounded by its nature and beauty. My curiosity for hair and beauty began when I was a young girl. I vividly remember being 8 years old and dreaming of becoming a hairdresser. When family and friends asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I told them that I wanted to be a prestigious hairstylist doing the hair of Hollywood stars.

I have always felt inspired to create, and as a young girl, I would get into a lot of trouble because I always had scissors in my hand! I would start cutting whatever I could find in the house, from my sister’s bangs to leaves that had fallen from trees. I would even cut curtains and even my mom’s dresses. They had to lock up the scissors due to this passionate hobby of mine, haha.

My Story

My professional career with hair started when I was 20 years old when I started beauty school. In 2000, I enrolled at the Academy of Beauty Robert S.A in Costa Rica, where I attended hair school and became a certified stylist in early 2004. After graduating, my husband decided to move back to Canada with our children to start a new life. This was not an easy move, but I told my family in Costa Rica that I wanted to follow my dreams with my new family and become a hairstylist. With that said, I do have two beautiful children who are the fuel to my life. I love them to the moon and back. I also love hair! I love making someone feel beautiful & helping them get the hairstyle they have always dreamed of.

Before launching my hairdressing career in Canada, I worked at Tim Hortons for a year in order to practice my English! Soon after that, I returned to my journey to become a hairstylist. I was hired as an apprenticeship stylist at Premier Salon inside Sears (remember Sears?) located at Marlborough mall. My boss Robin was a fantastic stylist; he helped me gain confidence behind the chair, and I will always be grateful for everything he did for me. I worked there for 6 years, and the experience was beautiful! I worked alongside supportive and talented coworkers who taught me a lot.

At that time, I still wasn’t licensed in Canada! Therefore my next goal was to get my official license. I was extremely determined and refused to give up. Being passionate as well as persistent helped me get the help I needed to follow my dreams.

After pestering my boss, he connected me with an ex-educator from Del Mar College, Maureen, a lovely and talented woman. She helped me prepare for my provincial and theory practical test. After 3 months of training, I was ready to truly challenge the trade. I was confident yet nervous as my English was still not perfect. I did not doubt my skills, and I was sure of my ability to excel at the test. I waited for the results, and I received a mark higher than the required passing grade. I felt so proud (and relieved)

December 20th, 2011, I finally became a Red Seal certified journeyman hairstylist with many years of experience behind the chair in Calgary.

Afterward, I continued working at other hair salons around Calgary until I decided to go independently. In 2017, I opened my hair studio named Hair by Guiselle, located at Citizens salon in downtown Calgary. I was there for 3 years, and this was my first hair salon in Canada.

Starting your own business is stressful. However, I was prepared to face any challenges that came my way! I am sure for many of us that COVID-19 has genuinely been the biggest one yet.

Presently, Guiselle Hair is located at Articollective YYC by the river. Ever since I started, I have not given up, and I continue to keep up to date with the latest trends and continue my education to provide excellent service for all my clients.

Another speciality of mine is hair treatments.

I love repairing dry, lifeless, damaged hair. I have even completed an additional education course to offer my clients the treatments they need to heal their hair. Treatments range from: Hair Botox smoothing treatments, in salon repairing Olaplex treatments for chemical damage color treatment hair, Moisturizing hydration I love doing a blowouts with any of this treatment to really show off your new polished healthy hair.

My daily inspiration is to make others look fantastic and feel beautiful after every salon visit.

For years, I went to different hairstylists hoping that one of them will get me a grey ombre balayage, but none of them succeeded on that. Until I met Guiselle!
